Prayers From the
Roman Sacramentary |
|
|
|
Incline the ears of Thy loving kindness, most merciful God, to
our prayers, and enlighten our heart with the grace of the Holy Ghost; so
that we may be worthy to assist at Thy Mysteries and to love Thee with an
everlasting love. |
|
|
|
O God, unto whom every heart lies open, and every wish speaketh,
and from whom no secret is hiden, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts, by the
inpouring of the Holy Ghost, so that we may perfectly love Thee, and worthily
magnify Thy holy Name. |
|
|
|
Inflame our reins and our heart, O Lord, with the fire of the
Holy Ghost, that we may serve Thee with a chaste body and please Thee with a
pure mind. |
|
|
|
May the Paraclete, who proceedeth from Thee, we beseech Thee, O
Lord, enlighten our minds and lead us into all truth, even as Thy Son hath
promised unto us. |
|
|
|
May the power of the Holy Ghost be with us, O Lord, we beseech
Thee, mercifully to cleanse our hearts and to keep them from all adversities. |
|
|
|
O God, who didst teach the hearts of the faithful by the light
of the Holy Ghost, grant that by the gift of the same Spirit we may be truly
wise and ever reioice in His consolation. |
|
|
|
Cleanse our thoughts, O Lord, we beseech Thee, by Thy
visitation, that when our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, shall come He may find
within us a dwellingplace prepared for Him; who liveth and reigneth with Thee
in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, forever and ever. Amen. |

Prayer of St.
Ambrose |

|
O gracious Lord Jesus Christ, though I who am a sinner, in
nowise presume on any merits of my own, and put all my trust in thy goodness
and mercy, yet do I fear and tremble in drawing near to the table on which is
spread thy banquet of all delights. Many a sin has sullied me in body and in
soul because I did not restrain my thoughts nor guard my lips: nevertheless
it is to Thee, O God of majesty and love, that I turn in my extremity, for
Thou art the fount of mercy; to Thee as quickly as I may, I speed: for Thou
alone canst heal me; I take refuge under Thy protection. I dare not face Thee
as my judge, but I cleave to Thee as my savior. Thy mercy is above all Thy
works. Though I fear, because of my sins, yet I trust in Thee on account of
Thy mercy. |
|
|
Réspice ergo in me óculis misericórdiæ tuæ, Dómine, Iesu
Christe, Rex ætérna Deus et homo, crucifíxus propter hóminem. Exáudi me
sperántem in te; miserére mei pleni misériis et peccátis, tu qui fontem
miseratiónis numquam manáre cessábis. Salve, salutáris víctima, pro me et
ómnia humáno génere in patíbulo Crucis obláta.
Turn, then, those pitiful eyes of Thine upon me, O Jesus Christ,
our everlasting king and Lord, who are God and man, and Who for man wast
crucified. Have mercy upon me, full of misery and of sin though I be, upon
me, whose only hope is in Thee, because of Thy loving-kindness. Hail! Thou
saving victim, offered up for me and for all mankind upon the gibbet of the
cross! Hail! Thou glorious and most precious Blood, that flowest from the
wounds of Jesus Christ, my crucified Lord; to wash away the sins of all the
world! Forget not, O Lord, that I am one of those whom Thou has created, and
with Thy own blood hast redeemed. |
|
|
Pǽnitet me peccásse, cúpio emendáre quod feci. Aufer ergo a me,
Amen. |
I repent of my sins: I will strive to amend my ways. O most
merciful Father, put far from me all my iniquities and all my offense; so
that, by Thee made whole in body and in soul, I may be accounted worthy to
approach the Holy of holies. Grant, in fine, that the holy foretaste of thy
body and blood, which Thou vouchsafest to me, a poor sinner, may be a pledge
of the full remission of my sins and of the washing away for evermore of all
my guilt. From my mind may it chase away every sinful thought: in my will may
it foster all holy desires: may it spur me on to the doing of works well-pleasing
to Thee; and may it be to me, of body and of soul, a very sure protection and
defense against the craft of all my enemies. Amen. |

Prayer of St.
Thomas Aquinas |

|
Almighty, everlasting God, look down in mercy upon me, Thy
servant, who now again draws near to the most holy Sacrament of Thy
only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I approach as one who is sick, to
the physician of life; as one unclean, to the fountain of mercy; as one
blind, to the light of eternal brightness; as one poor and needy, to the Lord
of heaven and earth. I implore Thee, therefore, out of the abundance of Thy
boundless mercy, that Thou wouldst vouchsafe to heal my sickness, to wash
away my defilement, to give sight to my eyes, to enrich my poverty, and to
clothe my nakedness; that I may receive the bread of angels, the king of
kings, the Lord of lords, with such reverence and humility, such contrition
and devotion, such purity and faith, such purpose and intention, as may tend
to the salvation of my soul. |
|
|
mihi diléctum Fílium tuum, quem nunc velátum in via suscípere propóno,
reveláta tandem facie perpétuo contemplári: Qui tecum vivit et regnat in
unitáte Spíritus Sancti, Deus, per ómnia sǽcula sæculórum. Amen. |
Grant to me, I beseech Thee, not only to receive the Sacrament
of the body and blood of the Lord, but to profit by its substance and virtue.
O God most merciful, grant me the grace to receive the body of Thy
only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, which he took of the Virgin Mary,
in such wise, that I may be found worthy to be incorporated into His mystical
body, and for evermore to be numbered among His members. O Father, most
loving, I am about to welcome into my heart Thy own beloved Son, hidden under
his Sacramental veil: may it, in Thy great goodness, be mine, in the end, for
all eternity face to face to gaze upon Him: Who with Thee liveth and
reigneth, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, forever and ever. Amen. |

Amen. |
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, who according to the
will of the Father and with the cooperation of the Holy Spirit hast by Thy
death given life unto the world, I adore and revere this Thy holy Body which
was given over and this Thy holy Blood which was poured forth for the many
unto the remission of sins. O merciful Lord, I beg of Thy mercy that through
the power of this sacrament Thou willst make me one of that many. Through
faith and love make me feel the power of these sacraments so I may experience
their saving power. Absolve and free from all sin and punishment of sin Thy
servants, Thy handmaidens, myself, all who have confessed their sins to me,
those who I have promised or am obliged to pray for, and so too those who
themselves hope or beg to be helped by my prayers with Thee. Make our Church
rejoice in Thy constant protection and consolation. Thou who livest and
reignest with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, forever
and ever. Amen. |

Look down, O Lord, from Thy sanctuary, from Thy dwelling in
heaven on high, and behold this sacred Victim which our great High Priest,
Thy holy Son our Lord Jesus Christ, offers up to Thee for the sins of His
brethren and be appeased despite the multitude of our transgressions. Behold,
the voice of the Blood of Jesus, our Brother, cries to Thee from the cross.
Give ear, O Lord. Be appeased, O Lord. Hearken and do not delay for Thine own
sake, O my God; for Thy Name is invoked upon this city and upon Thy people
and deal with us according to Thy mercy. That Thou wouldst defend, pacify,
keep, preserve, and bless this city, we beseech Thee, hear us. Amen. |
